Q: what is flux?
A: flux is an amorphous floating milonga and website. i've been frustrated by new york's dearth of "alternative" tango venues; to this end, the music played at flux will be primarily non-traditional and/or non-tango music. i value playfulness and the exploration of creativity in a way that is not overly circumscribed by adherence to an etiquette or tradition.
Q: non-tango music? huh?
A: not tango in the musical sense. but rather music that one can dance to using (and expanding upon) the skillset and vocabulary of the tango tradition (not discluding cross-pollination by other dance genres or techniques). i prefer "non-tango" to "alternative tango" because "alternative tango" implies to me an intention by the musicians to create with reference to tango--generally not the case. one can still dance "tango" to music that is not "tango" music, regardless of authorial intention.
Q: but if it's not "tango" music then how can the dancing be "tango"?
A: does the identity of the music proceed from the dance or does the identity of the dance proceed from the music? i don't know. it doesn't matter!
Q: why do you hate tango music?
A: i don't hate tango music.
Q: what's wrong with you?
A: many, many things...
